This course is designed to enable you to:

Explore your interest in recording and sequencing music, both in a recording studio and by using music software

Gain a clear understanding of how records are made

Know how to use recording studios, microphones, and music software

Is it for me?

This course is designed for people who are interested in music and how recordings are made. You’ll be asked to be active in recording using microphones, mixing desks and computers. You need to be enthusiastic and eager to learn. You do not need to be a musician.

There are no exams - your assessment will be through coursework. If you have not yet passed English or Maths at grade C or above you will need to work on these alongside your Music Technology course.

What’s involved?

You will learn how to set up and use industry-standard music software to create a variety of tracks. You’ll create sounds using software synthesis as well as using audio, and learn how to edit, arrange and mix the material to create finished products. You will spend time in a recording studio, learning how to use microphones to record a variety of instruments. By using multitrack recording techniques you will find out how records are made, and you will create your own recordings from the initial planning through to a finished CD.

Entry Requirements:

A range of GCSEs at grades C to E or a Level 1 or 2 vocational qualification.

If you do not have a grade C or above in English Language or Maths, you will study these subjects as an essential part of your programme of study.

Which courses go well with this?

If you are a musician, the Extended Certificate in Music Performance is a very good companion to this course.

The course has been designed to be taken alongside other Level 2 qualifications, such as GCSE English and/or Maths, or Literacy and/or Numeracy courses.

Progression:

This course could lead to the Level 3 Certificate and Subsidiary Diploma in Music Technology courses. You will also be well placed to take other Music courses, such as Composition and Events Support. If you are a musician you will also have access to the Music Performance courses. You may also be able to progress onto a wide range of A Level and BTEC National courses, depending on other qualifications you have and your interests.
