The course is suitable for learners with an interest in contemporary popular music, who have some skills on an instrument/voice but are keen to develop their technical knowledge and performing experience. Traditionally, Level 2 Music programmes have recruited from a wide range of applicants; some may have little practical experience and lack confidence, others may have quite a bit of experience in one area but need to broaden their knowledge, some may be practically strong but need the qualification to access Level 3 Music programmes. What is important is that applicants are keen to develop their skills, in both practical and theoretical work, and that they are prepared to engage positively in all aspects of the course. Applicants need to be open-minded and ready to try out new things.
Learners will work as a company to plan, rehearse and perform in a variety of gigs throughout the year. Material chosen for gigs is as varied as possible, with the direct aim of expanding knowledge and experience of different genres/styles. As well as practical sessions, learners will attend classes involving research, analysis and production of coursework. Written work will cover aspects of the music industry, professional development, musical analysis and theory and contextual studies.
