

BTEC Extended Diploma in Music (level 3)
• Develop skills and gain confidence in performing in a wide range of musical styles
• Develop specific skills in rehearsing, arranging and preparing for performances, working from a variety of sources including recorded music and various forms of notation
• Study the wider world of popular music; its history, how the industry functions and the role music plays in society
• Develop skills in events management and live sound specific to music events
• Progress to opportunities and employment within the Music sector
The qualification will also provide opportunities for progression to BTEC Higher Nationals and other HE qualifications.
The qualification purpose is to prepare for further learning or training and develop knowledge and skills in the Music subject area.
Is it for me?
The course suits those who have some experience of playing an instrument and want to develop their skills in a new direction. You should be interested in a career in the music industry or related fields. The qualification is taught over 2 years and is made up of 18 units of study. The course involves 13.5 hours of lesson time each week.

Year 1
Music Performance Techniques. Music Performance Session Styles.
Improvisation or Singing.
The Sound and Music Industry. Pop Music in Practice. Live Sound
Techniques.
Music Events Management. Music Project. Marketing and Promotion in
the Music Industry.
Year 2
Aural Perception Skills. Music Theory and Harmony. Notation Software.
Music and Society. Working as an Ensemble. Solo Music Performance.
World Music. Major Music Project (Double Unit).
If a student completes all of the first year units, they will achieve:
BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music (Performing) and BTEC Level 3
Certificate in Music Technology (Events Support)
After two years the qualification is a BTEC Extended Diploma in Music.
Progression:
Students who are successful on the two-year course can progress to Higher Education in a variety of subjects including Popular Music or Music Technology. Potential future occupations include broadcast engineering, entertainment, events management, teaching and industry promotions.
