This course is designed to enable you to:
Participate in a range of outdoor and sporting activities and to try new things
Take responsibility for yourself and others
Develop teamwork, communication, leadership and other skills
Prepare for employment
Gain a good qualification (equivalent to 2 or 4 GCSEs) and develop your practical skills.
· Prepare for further learning or training in the subject area and explore the potential to work in the leisure industry
The qualification will also provide opportunities for progression to BTEC level 3 courses and other level 3 qualifications.
Is it for me?
You do not need previous experience but you must be interested in the sports and outdoors, able to work as part of a team and be willing to participate in a wide range of activities, whatever the weather.
The qualification is taught over 1 year and is made up of up to 12 units of study. Depending on your options, the course involves 9 to 11.5 hours of lesson time each week plus additional performances and events.
Fitness for Sport
In this unit students explore the essential fitness requirements and training methods to achieve successful sports performance. Lifestyle, sports and physiological factors are considered.
Sports and Outdoor Activities
Students will participate in a range of activities such as rock climbing, kayaking and skiing. You will learn and apply new skills and techniques.
Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
Learners develop a good understanding of the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems of the human body.
Injury in Sport
You will develop knowledge of common sports injuries and illnesses and their treatment. You will consider risk assessment and management.
Leading Sports/Outdoor Activities
This unit develops your ability to lead others in practical outdoor and adventurous activities with the help of experienced teachers.
Running a Sports/Outdoor Event
You will be part of a team who plan and deliver an event for others to participate in.
You will plan and participate in expeditions and review the expeditions you take part in.
The Mind and Sports Performance
In this unit you will start to learn some sports psychology for example you will discover how personality has an effect on sport.
A range of GCSEs at grades D/E and above.
Which courses go well with this?
Any other level 2 courses e.g. English and Maths.
Many students progress to further study in Outdoor Education/Sport following success on this course. The course also helps to develop employability skills such as communication, team working and independence.
