Local Councillor supports Student Voice and only Student Sabbatical President in Shropshire

The Student Sabbatical President role at New College Telford is designed to provide a voice for college students, plan extracurricular activities and to assist with the transition from School to University and Employment. This role is the only one of its kind in Shropshire and one of only a few across the country. There are currently 33 members of the Student Council with 8 of these Council Members on the Executive Committee, who have specific roles to support students settle into college life.

The newly appointed President for academic year 2012/13 is Tayla Pound. Tayla lives inTelford and previously attended Blessed Robert Johnson Catholic College (BRJ). Tayla said: “I’m looking forward to supporting all New College Telford students by helping get even more activities going inside and outside college.”

Tayla Pound continued: “The Student Council is a great way for the college to really understand the voice of the student community here at New College Telford. I’m so pleased to be the new Sabbatical President and I’m looking forward to setting up extra activities that students want and need and playing my part in the New College Telford community. I want to help our students grow their skills and self-confidence and make sure they’re absolutely ready for Higher Education, employment - and life.”

Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Councillor and Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families said: “I really welcome the new role of student sabbatical president here at New College Telford. I am looking forward to working alongside Tayla, providing a link with the other voices of young people locally and supporting the work she is doing.”

Garry Phillips, Principal & CEO, New College Telford said: “The college is really excited in giving students a voice to help shape their college for the future. It also provides a fantastic opportunity and transition for students to progress from school to higher education or employment.”
