New College students reach new heights

Categories: Press Releases

As part of the ‘Outdoor and Adventurous Activities’ part of the course, students cover climbing for eight weeks during the first year of their course. Graham French, Outdoor Education Teacher at New College, Telford said: “These students have already completed an outdoor rock climbing section. With winter here we’re now working on technical skills indoors - it’s easier to coach people indoors and you can always rely on the weather.”

Graham continued: “We use Wolf Mountain in Wolverhampton. It’s a first-class indoor climbing area - the difficulty levels are colour coded so students can see the progress they’re making and develop their skills at the right pace for them.”
“As well as the practical outdoor activities, students write up their development plans and complete an assessment on it. We’ve now got 92 students on outdoor education courses and they’re gaining the in-depth skills that the leisure industry is crying out for.”
New College student, Steven Monk said: “You get to do something practical nearly every week and Wolf Mountain is brilliant.” Luke Roberts added: “I’ve been to a much smaller climbing centre before but it’s great to go higher and further - there’s more variety and it’s just more challenging.”
