New College students visit Royal Society

Categories: Press Releases

Kate Roberts, Head of Science at New College said: “The Royal Society is the most prestigious body in the field of Science in the U.K. and arguably the world. Our students have had an opportunity to mix with fellows of the Royal Society, meet scientists working at the frontiers of Science and discuss their work with them.”

Kate continued: “This event is by invitation only. We take our most able students every year and it really helps to focus their ambitions. Five of these students met up to discuss the day: Bethany Craik and Alessia Jones have both applied to Cambridge University - Bethany to study Natural Science and Alessia Chemical Engineering - while Sam Burton is planning to study Astrophysics, Samuel Wood to study Chemistry & Maths and Matthew Gilham has applied to study Physics at Oxford University.”

New College student, Bethany Craik said: “There were some extraordinary exhibits there – from the invisible objects showing how to create the perfect shape to bend light around an object so it looks like it isn’t there - to novel ideas like energy harvesting – gathering the energy from moving around or the heat from the body to do useful things.”

Matthew Gilham said: “I was particularly interested in the potential power of quantum computers – computers that are able to do a large number of things at exactly the same time.”

Alessia Jones said: “I found the idea of solar fuel - ‘sunshine in a tank’ - really interesting. Alternative energy is something I find fascinating and it’s a very important issue. I’m planning to continue my learning in this whole area.”

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of the world's most eminent scientists and was officially founded in 1660. The organisation's aim is to expand the frontiers of knowledge by championing the development and use of science, mathematics, engineering and medicine for the benefit of humanity and the good of the planet.
