Students enjoy real taste of Germany

Categories: Press Releases

Students studying A Level German at New College Telford visited the German market in Birmingham on Friday 2 December 2011. The Frankfurt Christmas market in Birmingham is the largest authentic German market outside Germany and Austria. It is open daily from 10am to 9pm until Friday 23 December. This traditional German Christmas market is back for its 11th year and stretches more than half a mile from Birmingham’s Bullring all the way to Centenary Square.

As well as seeing - and buying - a wide range of German goods and refreshments, students enjoyed performances of live music while browsing the stalls and trying out their German on stall holders.

Maria Richards, Curriculum Manager for Languages at New College, said: “It’s been a great opportunity for students to see and experience native German speakers and situations - and to put language skills into practice. Having the Frankfurt German market in Birmingham means that at the moment, Germany’s just a short train trip away.”

Maria Richards continued: “Our specialist trips and activities at New College - from Birmingham to Barcelona and more, really help to bring language learning alive - whether they’re for German, Spanish, French or Urdu.”

David Keane, who is studying Advanced Level German at New College, said: “The traditional clothing, gifts, the music and the smells of the German food brought it all to life and we’ve had a real taste of Germany”
