New College students celebrate European Day of Languages

Categories: Press Releases

New College Telford languages staff and students shared their celebration event with students from across the college. Students from Hadley Learning Community visited New College to perform Henna hand painting accompanied by Bhangra drumming - while the college restaurant provided an Asian themed menu including Vegetable Tikka Massala, Lentil and Spinach Bhaji in addition to Tandoori Chicken Pizza.

Maria Richards, Curriculum Manager for Modern Foreign Languages, said: “We’ve been celebrating the importance of languages with students right across the college. This year we are following an Eastern, Asian theme to reflect the college’s successful launch this month of Urdu AS Level.”

Sarah Jones, who is studying at the college said: “It seems a great way to raise the profile of languages and get people involved - and I’ve been really impressed with the individual designs on the Henna handpainting - every single one is unique.”

The day’s activities were organised by course tutor Sajid Younis.

Sajid Younis said: “Urdu has a rich history and has been influenced by many other languages, countries and cultures making it a very diverse language. It has left its influence all over South Asia and beyond and is spoken by hundreds of millions of people across the world. Advanced Level Urdu equips people to speak, write and understand the language in depth as well as raising awareness of associated cultures, customs and traditions.”

European Day of Languages is held in countries throughout Europe to celebrate and promote languages and language learning.
