NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS are celebrating A Level success

Students celebrating A Level success

Young people studying at New College Telford have once again achieved excellent results, with a 97% overall pass rate at A2, and 36% grades A and B.

A record 22 students have maximum grade As in all their subjects and have been accepted at some of the country’s most competitive universities. Many other students have already confirmed first choice university places.

New College Telford is the largest provider of A Level and Applied A Level qualifications in the local area and has successfully managed 3,000 exam entries in over 40 subjects this summer.

Congratulations
Graham Clark, New College Principal, said “The staff and governors are absolutely delighted for all of those students who have achieved such outstanding results. For many, student life is more challenging these days and their success is a culmination of a lot of hard work and determination. This is often underpinned by a lot of support from family and friends.”

“We are encouraged that most of our students have automatically gained places at their chosen universities this year. Others have also secured employment. However, our experienced Careers and Progression team are here for anyone who still needs help.”

A2 Results
450 candidates entered a total of over 1026 examinations in 42 different subjects in 2009. The overall pass rate is 97%, which is very much in line with national rates. 36% of New College students obtained A-B grades, and 67% A-C grades.

Results in Modern Foreign Languages, Maths, Fine Art, Graphics and Music were particularly good, with a high proportion of A-B grades.

These results represent an excellent achievement for a college which continues to cater for a diversity of students.

100% Pass Rate
A 100% pass rate was obtained in 25 of the college’s most popular subjects including Art, Business, Chemistry, English, History, Media Studies, Sociology, and Film.

A further 6 subjects obtained a pass rate of 95% or above.

High Achievers
22 very talented students achieved grade As in all their subjects.

These students have accepted places at some of the country’s most successful universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Warwick, Birmingham and King’s College, London. Their chosen subjects include Law, Maths, History, Medicine, Systems Engineering, Physics and Biochemistry.

AS Results
A record number of 744 candidates are also celebrating success at AS Level, with an overall pass rate of 86% and some excellent higher grades.

AS results were particularly strong this year in Maths and Further Maths, Fine Art, Textiles, Music, Sociology, French, German and Communication Studies.

BTEC and Vocational Options
In addition to A level success, over 200 students have successfully completed vocational courses, with many amazing individual achievements.

New College has a 100% pass rate in all National Diplomas, with over 75% of students achieving higher grades in Applied Science and Performing Arts.

Results in National Awards, which are equivalent to one A Level, are also very good, with a growing proportion of higher grades in Dance, Outdoor Education, Music Performance and Music Technology. In the case of Dance, individual successes include 3 gold medals in the national skills festival in June.

Over a third of New College students have successfully combined selected vocational courses with their A levels to individualise their programme of study. This has enhanced opportunities for entry to University or to exciting career choices. It is likely that this trend will continue in future years.

Similarly the results in First Diplomas are excellent, with a 100% pass rate and 70% higher grades overall. These qualifications are equivalent to 4 GCSEs and equip students really well for further studies and employment.
