Right on Q . . . hotel cooks up a treat for student chefs

Student chefs from Telford College spent the afternoon at a local hotel to experience life in a busy kitchen.

The level one and two City & Guilds students were invited to go behind the scenes at Telford Hotel & Golf Resort at Great Hay, run by QHotels, for a fact-finding trip.

Stuart Leggett, the college's chef lecturer, said: “The students saw how a large hotel operates, and were lucky enough to be served a delicious lunch prepared by the hotel's own chefs.

“This kind of visit provides invaluable experience to our students, which will stand them in good stead when they enter the workplace. We are looking forward to working closely with the hotel in the near future.”

The hotel's head chef, Gareth Rowlands, took time out to share his experiences with Telford College students of working in a large and prestigious spa hotel.Mr Leggett said: “It's really refreshing to meet a team that invests so much in each other their passion for the job really comes across.”

Ratu Naivalu, 16, a former Telford Priory School student who is on the level one hospitality and catering course, said: “The visit to QHotels was fantastic.

“We had a full tour of the whole estate including the spa, golf, hotel and restaurant areas. We learned how the business works and how they tailor each part of the company to the visitors they are aiming to attract.

“The food they cooked for us was amazing; my favourite dish was the sweet and sour pork with steamed buns.”
